Privacy Policy

Balm · Effective 23 September 2026

This privacy policy applies to the Balm app (the “Application”) for iPhone, developed by Earthling Apps (the “Service Provider”) as a Freemium service. The Application is provided “AS IS”. Balm is a migraine and headache diary built to keep your health information on your device and to ask as little of you as possible.

What information does the Application obtain and how is it used?

User-provided information

Balm does not require you to create an account or register to use it. The information you enter — your migraines and headaches, pain levels, symptoms, triggers, medications, questionnaire (MIDAS) answers and notes — is stored on your iPhone. Balm’s developer does not receive a copy of your diary.

Automatically collected information

Balm shows no advertising and does not build an advertising profile of you. To understand how the app is used and to diagnose problems, Balm uses privacy-respecting analytics and crash-reporting services. These may collect standard technical information such as your device type and model, unique device identifiers, IP address, operating system and how you interact with the app. This information is used only to keep Balm working and to improve it; it does not include the contents of your diary.

Does the Application collect precise real-time location of the device?

No. Balm does not track your location. The optional air-pressure feature uses your approximate location to request a forecast from Apple Weather (WeatherKit); a rounded, low-precision coordinate is stored on your device so the forecast can refresh. It is not added to your diary and is not shared. You can leave this feature off.

Apple Health and iCloud

If you connect Apple Health, Balm can, with your permission, read data such as sleep, heart-rate variability and cycle to show alongside your entries, and can save the headaches you log back to Health. Balm keeps no separate copy of what it reads, and this data does not leave your device through Balm. If you turn on iCloud sync, your diary is also kept in your own private iCloud so it is available on your other devices; it is stored by Apple under your Apple Account, and the developer cannot see it.

Do third parties see or have access to information obtained by the Application?

Balm uses a small number of services to function, each governed by its own privacy policy:

The Service Provider may disclose user-provided or automatically collected information: as required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena or similar legal process; when they believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect their rights, protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud, or respond to a government request; and to trusted service providers who work on their behalf, do not have an independent use of the information disclosed to them, and have agreed to adhere to the rules in this policy.

Refund requests

If you request a refund from Apple for an in-app purchase, the Service Provider may share information with Apple to help it review your request. By using the Application and making in-app purchases, you consent to the sharing of information about your usage and consumption of purchased content with Apple when resolving refund requests. This information may include how you accessed and interacted with the purchased content, your purchase history, and how long you have used the Application, and is shared only as needed and in accordance with Apple’s policies. You may withdraw this consent at any time by contacting the Service Provider at earthlingapps@gmail.com.

What are my opt-out rights?

Because your diary lives on your device, you are in control. You can edit or erase everything from within the app at any time (Settings → Erase everything), and you can halt all collection by uninstalling the Application using the standard process on your device or the App Store.

Data retention and managing your information

Your diary is retained on your device (and in your iCloud, if you enabled sync) until you delete it; the developer holds no copy to retain. Subscription status held by our payments provider is kept while your subscription is active and in accordance with their policy. If you would like help removing any information, contact the Service Provider at earthlingapps@gmail.com and we will respond in a reasonable time.

No ads, and never sold

Balm shows no advertising and does not sell your personal information. It does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites for advertising. The analytics and crash reporting described above are used only to run and improve Balm.

Children

Balm is not directed to children under the age of 13, and the Service Provider does not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information, please contact the Service Provider at earthlingapps@gmail.com so that the necessary actions can be taken.

Security

The Service Provider is concerned about safeguarding the confidentiality of your information. Because your diary is stored on your device, its security also depends on your device’s own protections (such as a passcode and Face ID/Touch ID). The developer provides reasonable safeguards for the limited information it processes, but please be aware that no security system can prevent all potential security breaches.

Changes

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time for any reason. The Service Provider will notify you of any changes by updating this page with the new policy. You are advised to consult this page regularly for any changes; continued use is deemed approval of all changes. This policy is effective as of 23 September 2026.

Your consent

By using the Application, you consent to the Service Provider processing your information as set out in this Privacy Policy, now and as amended. “Processing” means using or touching information in any way, including collecting, storing, deleting, using, combining and disclosing information.

Contact us

If you have any questions about privacy while using the Application, please contact the Service Provider at earthlingapps@gmail.com or through the contact page.
